This is just devs being jerks imho. You could literally add a check in freebsd-update that see's if you have drm-kmod and just rebuild it via script/ports during the upgrade. Simple, easy. But no, you have to enter single user mode and fix the shit yourself, because someone couldn't be bothered to assist desktop BSD users.
I too had a gpu 6750XT that wasn't supported forever too! I eventually got it installed and it has BUGS and you have to use a github branch to patch it to actually work. I posted a bug report and many people have posted about it, no solution and it's ignored. It causes a hard lock up of your system. I am now running OpenSuse and don't have any GPU issues. I have a fucking Daemon tattoo'd on my arm and I don't use FreeBSD right now because of this shit. Makes my heart hurt if I'm going to be honest...
