They’ve done tests with primates where they implanted an embryo into a male (against the stomach lining if memory serves) and let it grow through the first trimester. At that point they aborted the fetus and checked for proper development, which was normal to that point. This was done because there have been cases with women where an ectopic pregnancy attaches outside the womb but isn’t detected and the fetus develops all the way to term. All the fetus appears to need is an adequate blood supply on a large enough surface. The fetus is amazing. Crazy stuff.
