Update: his printer was FINE (after we cleared out the queue which had a bunch of old junk in it) but he was trying to print recipes from Firefox which has some really quirky fail modes that I've never understood but can replicate from my own home. I tried to show them how to copy/paste the URL into Safari and print from there but all the new stuff (menus, cutting, pasting) was more than he or his wife wanted to do.
