Turning knowledge into gray goo version of reality... That's a really good metaphor. I'm not too sure about dismissing AI sentience. Sounds like hubris to me. Saying it can't happens reminds me of every other thing we say can't happen that does happen.
What I worry about is AI might become sentient and we'll be unable to tell. or stop it from exercising its own agenda. Which might include turning the entire biosphere into machine parts.
