I'm always on the lookout for games that are different.
So when I stumbled over the [Rings of Saturn](https://store.steampowered.com/app/846030/V_Rings_of_Saturn/) demo I was intrigued.

It's a top-down realistic physics space sim set in a future where mining the rings of Saturn for minerals is a career path.

It's been fun so far and like all sim "fun" it's made up of the disasters caused by you, the player, doing something stupid:

* me: spins ship 180 degrees at speed to grab a single ore from space with the cargo bay doors open only to see the entire cargo bay vomited out by my now backwards heading and float off *

The control system is well thought out, and surprisingly nuanced - you can manually fly ships, or use the autopilot. The manual system means you use vectored thrusters to make changes your current heading to get to where you need to go, while the autopilot will take care of the micro management of vectors relative to other moving objects but is less able to deal with the *oh fuck* moments. It's fairly intuitive once you unlearn the "WASD" mindset, by which I mean, you can totally play the game controlling everything with the keyboard, and for the first hour or so I did. But you can also make furniture with a chainsaw. It just won't be very attractive to look at.

There is a central hub, where you can find crew, repair your ship, buy upgrades etc. The upgrades have dependencies but the game is fairly clear about what those are. So far the only upgrade I have bought are cargo baffles which stop your cargo from floating out of the cargo bay (see the 180 spin above). They're also not particularly over-priced. So far I've completed about six runs and I'm almost at the point where I can buy a second ship, a duplicate of the starter level one granted, but still I'm not feeling the grind and the game only has a single currency - both are sales points.
