Apparently a new crossing loop for freight trains has recently been commissioned near Avoca (on the Maryborough-Ararat line) and it's 930m long. Meanwhile another loop between Dunolly and Donald has been extended to 1200m (both loops are on the same line and should broadly see the same trains).
I've heard rumbles that the new 930m loop isn't really long enough to be useful, and the extension of the other loop does suggest that might be true - but it's beyond my expertise. Any train folks able to shed any light on this?
