It could never be proved but my guess as to why comic books and animation are considered 'kid's stuff' and dismissed in the US when they are considered mediums through which any sort of story can be told in the rest of the world is the absolute dominance of the US film and later television industries. To cater to kids you animate capeshit and funny animals, to appeal to adults you need real actors.
