This post raises an interesting point about D&D: in terms of social structures it's much more like the American frontier. A more medieval setting would wealth come from serving a lord and acquiring land.
The frontier aspect of D&D can be problematic, but it's nonetheless really interesting, and one of the more original aspects of the game. Like a lot of things about D&D, it's not a bad thing, but it is something we should really think about.
