I guess the problem for a lot of users like me is that we would like an integrated platform where we can do a lot of the things you mentioned - which people experience as limitations - in one place.
The value of Twitter (before now!) is the ease with which we could use it without having to search for too many 3rd party clients or fixes, and the massive userbase. As a publicly-minded academic, I want to engage with people and disseminate research broadly.
