“Daniel’s people had thought of God in terms of their own small community, their own capital city and the temple there. Not only were the Jews God’s chosen people, but also (they tended to think) they held exclusive rights to him. God had never intended his blessings to stop with the Jews, however. He had the world in mind. At the time he called Abraham, he had promised that through Abraham’s offspring he would bless the whole earth (see Genesis 12: 3). The Jews had found it difficult enough to keep their own faith, let alone spread it to others. Only while captives in Babylon, unwillingly dragged far from home, did they begin to convince others that their God deserved honor. The proclamations Nebuchadnezzar and Darius made because of Daniel (4: 2–3; 6: 26–27) honored God more than anything a king of Judah had done in years.”
