It's hard to move from 'I need one more promotion/milestone' mentality to 'I need to engage with my family & friends & community' if you haven't been engaged in a community already. Like dating vs marriage - the difference between trying to impress someone a few times and building a life in partnership with someone. There's a difference between what we need to be at 25 and 45 where doing well at work is no longer sufficient - you have to be engaging in making the world better beyond work. (Although some people decide they need to turn community into a profit making system instead)

I think our systematic dislocation of people - move away for college, move for that good job, move to the suburbs when you have kids, then have your kids move away from you, working and living in different towns/cities - is a big part of why we get these broken mindsets.
