Prisons really disappear people. You can lose your job waiting for a court date to come. You can't inform them and since being held by the State is the scarlet letter (next to being undocumented: you become someone undeserving of human dignity and fall into the Protestant vortex of having to work for it - a debt forced on you), you become fucked.
