My two cents:
1. The Israelis can be very, very good, but the '73 war kicked off with massive intelligence and (on the Suez front) tactical failures, so this sort of surprise attack fail is hardly unprecedented. Complacency and peace-time thinking are the bane of all militaries, even the IDF/Mossad.
2. We underestimate how smart the Iranians are: they have been doing a lot of good thinking about how to fight stronger, more technologically advanced enemies and it shows in their advice to Hamas.
