I just listened in on a IEEE presentation on innovations in 5G/6G networks. Networking is not my profession, so some of it was over my head, but it was very interesting nonetheless.
The industry is also trying to secure new spectrum in the 7.1-8.5Ghz range to increase bandwidth.
They described the cellular network as dynamically reconfigurable and running on a distributed computing platform. Interaction with the computing platform is done via API. Some API's are open, some are closed, but there is a push to open them.
There are plans to natively run AI on the network and allow it to dynamically reconfigure and optimize the network. This is being to done to minimize labor costs; most the most use of equipment, spectrum and energy; and allow operators to rent out AI compute power during times of low demand as a new revenue stream.
There is conflict between allowing innovation and maintaining critical inrastructure.
Wild stuff, interesting times.
