I don't think people are morons. I think it has more to do with where they get their news (or "news"), and how much propaganda is in that "news".
It's similar to how short Americans of all stripes keep their cars:
"Americans own their longest-kept cars for an average of about 8 years.
In our sample, 64% have only owned their current cars for 5 years or less."
That's short, and very probably also driven by propaganda, which we call advertising.
