Every individual will ultimately make decisions that benefit them and the people around them in the short term at the cost of the long term or people far away. I think we're just wired that way, even if we're able to understand the implications and even feel empathy for people we'll never meet.

Humans will almost always choose the cheapest & easiest option, and rarely sacrifice now for the benefit or tomorrow. In the end, nature will have to force us to change.
