Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky was imprisoned from 1941 to 1945 for her work as a courier for the Community Party, which resisted the Nazi regime in her home country of Austria. Prior to the war, she had been an architect who designed the "Frankfurt Kitchen," which introduced many of the elements of the modern kitchen. Atlas Obscura looks at her remarkable life as a political activist — and how her professional life was political too. “I didn’t yet know the great Heinrich Zille quote, ‘You can kill a person with an apartment just as well as with an axe,’ but I felt it,” she wrote in her memoir "Why I Became an Architect" (Warum ich Architektin wurde) about how a visit to a poor community in Vienna changed the course of her career.
