IIRC he did that using some WebFinger hackery.
It's not a smart idea to have different URL schemes pointing to the same content as it introduces incompatibilities as you described, but out of those 3 URLs I think the Alex-one is the most readable tbh
I am really, really glad I don't have to make these decisions.
