Weird. I post to people on the fediverse all the time. I post replies. I chat with people on the fediverse all the time. And I chat in groups and in conversations on the fediverse also. I even chat with people in email - though not so much these days because in 1996-1997 we couldn't convince the major players at the time to get rid of spam. We tried. Letting Chinese dissidents communicate anonymously was seen as far too important and it seems we're now stuck with that decision.
They're all just messages. The differences that you're trying to define are generally because somebody found a different way to theme them or send them via a different protocol stack or group the recipients differently and call them something else and/or build a product around. A message is a message. It has a sender (that is not necessarily the author), a blob we'll call the content (which may or may not have a structure), and somewhere between 1 and ∞ recipients (which we'll call the audience).
