I had a "best friend" who was black a long time ago. I helped him out many, many times. One day, he backstabbed me for no apparent reason. Which caused me considerable damage. Many years later, I learned he was a closeted homo. In retrospect, I realized he had a habit of badmouthing everyone behind their back. He was a mean queen. That should've been a major red flag, but I was very young and clueless.
