To explain why: Chromium supports local models. This means Proton doesn't have to send data to their servers, which is a plus!
Other browsers don't support this yet, so Proton's backup is running it on their servers. They do this without keeping logs, and data isn't used for training.
Proton's implementation is an example of how it should be done.
