This idea turned out to be wrong, because you can't get an SSL cert that covers subdomains of subdomains. Only way it works is if I replace dots in the domains with underscores or something.

Why? Because then each Fediverse server can be distinct on the Nostr side using regular nip05 domain filtering.
In the other direction, I'm thinking about doing basically the same thing. I would go ahead and let Mastodon catch on fire over the fact you can't change usernames.
