Has anyone on here had good results using gardening to shade your house for summer?

I'm planning to set up the front yard (west facing) to do a little more than it's doing now. Right now, it's just pretty, and smells good.

I'm hoping to make it:
- shade the house in summer
- give birds and lizards somewhere to live
- give pollinators something to eat
- smell nice
- be pretty

I'm looking for information on trees (maybe a flowering gum? Jacaranda?), versus vines for shade, placement, etc
