I think what troubles me the most about Slack's decision to start training AI on conversational data is that Slack positions their product to handle workplace coordinative communication - to "replace email" (and by extension, the interoffice memos that email ate).
AI in that context, whether to generate text or to substitute for reading it, amounts to a tacit admission that the coordinative communication Slack is supposed to enable has minimal value.
