In my opinion it's slightly more nuanced, I think it's righteous to pirate anything digital, in fact it might even be a moral requirement because the alternative is slavery and I mean this in the literal sense, not being hyperbolic.
Unless you pirate something, you do not own it, you have a license to access the product for as long as its creator gives you their blessing, which they can take away at any point in time.
At the same time, however, I believe that those who make anything you find valuable should be paid for their work (#v4v), it's just that I believe the payment should be done AFTER you have gotten value out of the product.
I have spent a lot of money on series I particularly enjoy (buying figurines, DVDs, physical books, etc etc), more than most people would find reasonable, I have bought copies of games for friends as well as for me, etc etc. But no matter what the piece of digital content is, it always started with me pirating it. No exception. If someone tells me to play a game or watch an anime or anything, I will always pirate it before paying for it, to figure out if it's worth my time.
