I agree. It's a really cool feature, but it doesn't seem to be deployed widely... I've noticed that Coracle has an option for that, but I'm not seeing it in Amethyst.
Also, I noticed that many relays don't seem accept NIP-13? Not really sure why.
The benefit is, your messages with proof of work provides additional "proof" that you're a human being and not a bot spamming the system.
