I have learnt this the hard way: Tell a story that is yours to tell. Quite apart from people telling you who you are and aren't and what stories belong to whom, you will know deep in your bones when you aren't 'in' it. And you have to be in it, deeper than knee-deep. At least waist deep. Neck deep is best.
