Forty-eight years later, my wife and I share a suburban home and our bed with a rescue dog named Guapo, a hybrid mix of mostly dachshund and chihuahua according to the results of genetic testing my wife ordered. We named Guapo after an espresso blend called “El Guapo” or “the handsome one” sold by a local coffee bean roaster a few miles from our house. Guapo is light-brown, similar in color to an Americano with milk. That is my drink of choice in the morning, before I go out for my daily hike. Sometimes I take Guapo out for a short walk of 1-2 miles and then bring him home before venturing out for a longer hike by myself, as I prefer—he is uninterested in birding or plant identification and interferes with my engagement in those activities by tugging on his leash. He does a lot of sniffing, but never tells me what he has discovered! This being the first morning that was a bit cooler at the beginning of autumn in central Texas, I knew it would be more tolerable for a dog wearing a fur coat. So, yesterday, I gave up my birding and was joined on a 6-mile hike by man’s best friend. (2/6)
