I’m starting to think that Bluesky’s #atproto has the potential of being a better foundation for distributed social content.
I’ve long lamented that the lack of portable IDENTITY and DATA separate from the hosting server is a fundamental weakness of #ActivityPub (https://sfba.social/@drahardja/110812992305830699). As far as I can tell (I’m not an expert), atproto’s cryptography-based identity can free each user from any particular server instance and truly provides portability, as in you can take all your identity and data off a server and go host it somewhere else without loss of continuity.
As it stands today, #Bluesky/atproto is still basically a single instance, centralized server, with a long long way to go. But they *are* credible when they claim that they have designed their protocol for decentralization, and I fully expect that to happen unless a billionaire owner derails or defunds the project. https://j12t.social/@j12t/113553217926151605
