The thing is, at that point, it's very hard for Trump supporters to either criticise the words of their leader, or argue that what he actually meant by them was something manifestly factually inaccurate.
He must never be wrong, Russia factually did start the war, therefore by "you" he must have been talking to both sides and meant Russia should never have started it.
