In that time, iceland (like other protestant countries in Europe - i.e. countries that were not catholic, did not follow the pope with latin lsnguage in the vatican and latin letters) used german letters (Fraktur for printed texts and Kanzleischrift (current) for handwriting). Around that time the german type designer Sütterlin developed a number of fonts. Among them were fonts for first graders to learn to write. The german (non-latin) one is today strongly associated with the name Sütterlin. Most Germans actually think Sütterlin is the actual name for german hand written fonts. As knowledge of this Sütterlin font is essential if you are trying to research your (german) ancestry, there are a number of online ressources to learn Sütterlin, that you can find with the search word "Sütterlin".
