I guess I've been protected from some of this by several different things.
1. My time in the SFF fan community; where most differences are actively ignored (sometimes in ways that are themselves problematic)
2. The fact I abandoned communities on certain platforms, rather than gritting my teeth and staying
3. ADHD making it so I missed a LOT of social subcontext (sadly, I'm getting better at catching them)
4. A loose local community of friends spread over the PNW organized w/email
