Spoilers: It's not good.
-3.2 million dogs entered shelters and rescues in 2023. This was 3.2% higher than 2022, which was 10.2% higher than 2021.
-Dog adoptions in 2023 were 5% lower than in 2019. Cat adoptions were up.
-Non-live outcomes for dogs surpassed the number for cats. 359,000 dogs were euthanized in 2023 vs 330,000 cats.
-A total of 900,000 animals have entered “and lingered” in our nation’s shelters since and rescues since 2021, resulting in “an ongoing capacity crisis.”
-6,010,000 dogs and cats have had live outcomes from animal shelters, This is an increase of 166,000 live outcomes over 2022 and 75,000 more than in 2019
