A fair number of the students I teach end up at colleges like Harvard and while grade inflation plays a role, with Harvard getting applications from all over the globe and the pick of the brightest, conscious, highly motivated students I don't think it's all inflation.
These are kids who work harder than the gentlemen with their Cs did back in the 30s and 40s.
I do think they focus on grades a bit more than is ideal, but they also do great work.
