ADB to provide $71 million for water resources management

The government of Bangladesh has signed a $71 million loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the 'Climate-Resilient Integrated Southwest Project for Water Resources Management'. The project aims to ensure climate-resilient water resources management and will be implemented by the Bangladesh Water Development Board under the Ministry of Water Resources. The objectives of the project include improving agricultural, fisheries, and other related development through an improved drainage congestion system, implementing integrated water resources and participatory water management plans, providing improved infrastructure and support services for sustainable development, and establishing Water Management Organisations. The project will be implemented from January 2024 to December 2028, and the ADB loan is repayable in 25 years with a fixed interest rate of two percent. ADB has been a major development partner of Bangladesh since 1973, with a total loan amount of $31,547.47 million and a total grant amount of approximately $571.2 million.
