Definitely seems like you have to strike some kind of balance between wanting a service that's good for the present (pulling in lots of posts through relays / Fedifetcher / follows) and one that's good for the past (keeping old posts stored).

I have opted for favoring the present, being joined to several relays and relay.fedi.buzz for relevant hashtags, while having a content cache retention period of just 20 days.
