It is decidely odd that a cat would drink so much water, and is normally indicative of pathology. Cats instincts drive them to moving rather than stagnant water, which is finally being recognised with the cat water fountains that are now on offer, either that or they will drink from places that other animals are seen drinking from, which I reckon isn't necessarily as safe!
Being worried about her dubious water sources seems unnecessary given how well she has done under your care until now. Something is going to get her in her old age eventually, its not your fault. Being very hard on yourself there.
