January 3, Pucheng, Shaanxi Province: A 17-year-old student at Pucheng Vocational School fell to his death at school. Later, after the family arrived at the school, they were locked in a room by the teacher and not allowed to leave until dawn, when they learned of their child's suicide. Afterwards, the family was taken to a hotel and guarded by two teachers taking turns. The suspicious circumstances of the case and the treatment of the deceased's parents triggered outrage among the local people. On January 5, a large number of citizens gathered outside the school to show their support for the parents of the student.
