I think they ate what they have been told to eat, only the farmer knew what nutrition they really needed. It was probably the same for all except for the ones living in the house.

Although the farmer had the central power, he was experienced and informed in it, trying to give each animal the care it deserved and the environment they felt most comfortable in.

Maybe the animals needed to grab the power too (in this case through “communist” system), to really understand what it was and find even better solutions
