Repressions continued into the 20th century. Under Stalin’s regime, when the cult of Stalinism and the fight against “Ukrainian nationalism” peaked, kobzars became victims of the Great Terror. Many were arrested, executed, or disappeared without a trace. In the 1930s and 1940s, when Ukraine was experiencing the Holodomor and mass repressions, the empire sought to destroy not only the physical strength of the nation but also its cultural memory.1/5
