I've found explanations that FreeBSD's "rand()" used to be terrible - in its own manpage.
I'm fairly sure I've seen other systems also have issues. (for the record I just ran our random builtin a bunch of times and got a pretty uniform distribution on linux - but I am not a mathematician and this is not number advice)
