Ernest Cole was born in 1940 to a Black family in South Africa and witnessed the formalization of apartheid regime as a child, later working for Drum magazine as one of the first Black freelance photographers. He smuggled photos out of South Africa to publish a book titled "House of Bondage" which introduced many people around the world to the horrors of apartheid. Cole was banned from South Africa and faded into obscurity in New York City before his mysterious invitation to Sweden where he left tens of thousands of negatives, much of which had not been previously published. The American series began with a grant from Ford Foundation to explore America's racial hierarchy.
