Just to interject but as far as crops go almost all the "breeds" we get in the U.S. are chosen solely for their longevity. For instance I've heard that hardly anyone has eaten a real plum because they just don't last and various tricks to restrict their ripening result in a subpar product. We've all seen this to a lesser extent with onions, strawberries, tomatoes, etc.
