I don't know if this happened in NZ but it could very well have.
The investors have very strong confirmation bias and narrow vision, and yet they are very quickly caught up in the latest emotional trend. It's very irrational from a risk management perspective.
I recall one time as the tech lead at at startup in that part of the world when the biggest buzz term at the time was cloud micro services. And that's all the venture capitalists in NZ were interested in. It was mind blowing.
