Your LOL for today: USB devices don't have a unique identifier like a MAC address. Software often uses vendor + product ID as a stand-in. But those aren't unique, they're the same if you have two of the same product, like two identical hard drives. I ended up having to identify things but which port they were plugged in to. Hope I never move them around!
