#WritersCoffeeClub empathy cont'd:
Today's topic really rubbed me the wrong way. Everyone claiming they have the power to feel other people's emotions...
I'm not claiming people don't have the capability of reacting to other people's situations they observed, nor do I claim one can't imagine being in someone else's situation but to actually think what you are feeling is someone else's actual emotions is a bit of a tall order if you ask me. (Edit: I'm using "someone else" here as an imaginary person who isn't you, not necessarily a real, separate person)
You imagine yourself in "someone else's shoes" alright, but what you're feeling is your brain's reaction to that imagination, not someone else's.
So, how do you know "empathy" isn't just an illusion?
