The StackOverflow controversy reminds me of the CDDB/Gracenote situation from, geez, 25 or so years ago. There was no AI, but CDDB:
- Built a CD recognition database using the work of unpaid volunteers
- Shared this freely-- for a while
- Decided that their open-source pledge had been in error
- Switched to incompatible data formats
- Sold out to a new owner and started charging for access
- Filed patents and sued competitors
It's currently property of Nielsen Holdings.
