I’m sure you did not mean to imply that I don’t know what the meaning of the word “dumb” means.
Let me elaborate more on why I think special relays have a terrible aftertaste:
Special relays don’t help with censorship resistance, are usually unique, are unreliable, and are a UX nightmare.
I reaaaally don’t want to have to think so much about what relays I have to add, how many I should add or not, which I should write to and read from and for what (DMs, images, long form, zaps), whether it supports search, has a custom algorithm feed, will it keep my DMs private, or whether I have to worry if it’s going to be up in a month or not.
Personally I just want to _at most_ add or remove relays and have the Nostr client carry the relay management burden for me, based on the NIPs each relay supports. And if I’m missing a feature, the client could likely suggest new relays that provide the support.
re: Choosing to accept notes from a person or not
> From the perspective of a relay: this is pretty dumb, like firewall-level dumb… a whitelist isn’t a smart feature. From the perspective of a client: We use mute lists and WOT, which are client responsibilities.
re: Allowing a person to read some notes and not others.
> Personal relays, communities, private relays exist. I don’t particularly think those are smart, because whether one can read or not can be limited by the network, user’s pubkey, or event fields and that’s all very simple. WOT and Custom Feed relays are not “dumb” and require to be “trusted” to be used properly: you don’t get to choose what you read, the relay decides that.
