In this case, and IMHO, "sane default" would mean "here's a big instance, and here's a local instance, and if you enter your interests here's a couple instances that might work for you".
That would be a sane default, vs the three or two hundred pages that are currently offered.
(And there could *still* be the million instances, just below that)
