Proof-of-Work was a magic idea. It connnects the physical and the metaphysical worlds. It has to be useless, if you try to make it useful you will fail.
You will fail if you succeed, and you will fail if you fail. Naturally people tried everything, from district heating to mushroom farming to buffers in the electric grid.
Yes there are cases here and there where this works, but it's the noise not the
signal.
I respect Monero's "we can fork faster than ASIC masks can be made" approach.
Bitcoin's SHA256 is here to stay, but it doesn't matter who makes the chips, it
doesn't matter whether a few more useful niches can be found or not.
It will primarily be useless and random proof-of-work, and it's meant to be.
In art history, there are so many unfinished works. So many great artists that died too young to be discovered. Noone will go back and finish their work or discover them now. It wasn't meant to be, move on.
